The term “clean eating” has become popular and is used to promote healthy foods which normally mean the food is gluten, sugar, or dairy free. Over the past year, the term “orthorexia” has gained prominence. Although not officially recognized as an eating disorder, the term refers to a fixation with healthy eating to the point where it becomes a compulsion; a compulsion that may affect health and overall quality of life. This presentation will go over the most common food allergies and how allergies/intolerances are being used as an umbrella to hide an eating disorder.

Objectives:

  • Creating a basic knowledge of nutrition trends and the clinical implications of nutrition trends for patients struggles with eating disorder.
  • Comprehension of the definition of orthorexia and the difference between orthorexia and healthy eating.
  • How to address nutrition trends with patients who struggle with eating disorders with clinical interventions
  • Cultivate an understanding around why discussing trends in nutrition with out clients who struggle with eating disorder is imperative to healing.

Presented by: Lisa Arroyas, RD- Director of Nutrition

Lisa is a registered dietitian practicing in many areas of dietetics including eating disorders, chemical dependency, diabetes, PCOS and weight management. Lisa has been working with adolescents and adults with eating disorders for over 10 years in both inpatient and outpatient settings.  She is the co-founder of the Reasons Eating Disorder Center and has served as the Director of Nutrition for a multi-site substance abuse and dual-diagnosis program. She is extremely passionate and dedicated to helping individuals struggling with food and body issues.
