Using a combination of therapeutic and medical treatment options, our team will develop a personalized approach to help you reclaim a healthy relationship with food, body and mind.

Reasons Eating Disorder Center Treatment Approach

We believe in thoughtful psychiatric care, medication management, compassionate 24-hour nursing in our inpatient and residential programs, frequent individual therapy, supportive family therapy, intensive group psychotherapy and therapeutic nutritional restoration. Our ability to handle acute medical issues and provide specialized nursing care differentiates our services from other Los Angeles area eating disorder treatment facilities.

All of our programs are highly structured and, at the same time, supported with intentionally designed exposures and real-life challenges to assist in maintaining lasting recovery. Many of our patients come to us after struggling for long periods of time and often after several attempts at treatment. No matter how many times you’ve gone through treatment it is never too late to try again.

Our Treatment Philosophy

Healing is a fundamental aspect of eating disorder treatment. We understand eating disorders are rooted in and driven by anxiety and profound disruptions to one’s sense of self. Through inpatient, outpatient and residential eating disorder treatment, we offer you hope rooted in the belief that you are capable of living an authentic life of meaning and connectedness. Our goal is to create a culture that nurtures the integration of body and mind.

This is distilled into four key philosophical tenets:

Personalized Treatment

Whether you’re seeking outpatient or inpatient eating disorder treatment, you are the most important member of your personalized treatment team. Across all levels of care, each patient at Reasons receives a thorough assessment and personalized eating disorder treatment plan from a dedicated, multidisciplinary team of experts. If needed, your treatment plan will also address co-occurring disorders such as anxiety, depression, substance abuse, trauma, bipolar disorder or other mental health issues.

Focus on Wholeness and Integration

We see you beyond your eating disorder symptoms. You are a human being, capable of engaging in courageous, difficult work in the service of healing and meaningful eating disorder recovery. We provide daily opportunities to allow for the intentional, mindful experiencing of the full range of thoughts and emotions that are an integral part of your everyday life.

Relationships are Important

Eating disorders are maintained in isolation. It is through connection that healing and sustainable recovery are possible. Our approach focuses on transforming the nature of your relationships – with other people, with your body, with food, and with yourself.

Safety Comes from Challenges

Challenges make us stronger. We believe that successfully and directly encountering avoided or feared situations is essential to developing a sense of safety and personal agency. We offer an array of Exposure and Response Prevention interventions designed to aid in this process, including:

  • Normalizing eating behaviors and attitudes towards food and one’s body to create a healthy nutrition philosophy
  • Challenging and replacing maladaptive thoughts and behaviors
  • Graduated exposure to feared and avoided foods and situations, and teaching of alternate, healthy responses
  • Re-integrating the disconnected systems regulating emotions and thoughts, and the sensory pathways of the body
  • Daily mindfulness and relaxation practice
  • Grounding your experience of the world in an improved understanding of your emotions and reactions

Trauma-Informed Care

Our staff has an awareness and sensitivity to individuals who have a trauma history. We leverage a trauma-informed care approach that includes:

  • A physical environment designed with sensitivity to the sensory experience
  • Therapists trained in empirically derived and empirically supported trauma-specific treatment modalities
  • Staff trained in Trauma-Informed Care Approach
  • Programming that incorporates our current understanding of the somatosensory and neurobiological underpinnings of trauma and anxiety

As a treatment team, we take into account and respond to the whole person, treating both symptoms and behaviors as well as what lies deeper. We consider the life experiences of our patients and collaborate with each person individually in restoring and moving toward hope for the future. We explore values, identity, spirituality, and help each of our patients find meaning on their life path.
