Co-occurring Disordersuhsinc_remote2020-09-21T09:57:10-07:00

Treating Co-Occurring Disorders, Substance Use Disorders and Other Mental Health Concerns

An eating disorder may occur alongside other symptoms or even be a way of coping with another psychiatric diagnosis. It is essential that eating disorder treatment also addresses related mental health concerns.

At Reasons Eating Disorder Center, we address acute psychiatric conditions that may be present with an eating disorder. We are uniquely equipped to provide co-occurring disorders treatment as part of our eating disorder treatment programs.

We work to stabilize the following conditions in conjunction with expert eating disorder care in order to sustain recovery:

  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Bipolar disorder
  • Borderline personality disorder
  • Obsessive-compulsive disorder
  • Social phobias
  • Schizophrenia
  • Delusional disorders
  • PTSD or trauma-related symptoms
  • Self-injury and suicidal ideation
  • Substance use and abuse

Co-occurring mental health issues and the behaviors associated with those concerns can vary significantly from person to person and throughout the life of the illness. Receiving a thorough assessment and specialized and integrated treatment is essential. Reasons Eating Disorder Center offers programming that addresses mental health as well as eating disorders at the same time in an integrated approach.

SUBSTANCE USE DISORDER TREATMENT AT REASONS

Many individuals with an eating disorder also have an active substance use disorder. We treat those with a primary eating disorder who require assessment and integration of substance use issues into their care.

Through our connection to BHC Alhambra Hospital, we are able to provide detox from alcohol, opioids, and benzodiazepines with follow up individualized plans for maintaining sobriety and assisting with finding sober living while in outpatient care.

Some people arrive at Reasons with existing substance abuse recovery plans. Our commitment is to work collaboratively with primary substance use disorder programs and sponsors to support ongoing treatment and recovery goals.

In addition to the full range of eating disorder treatment, we also provide:

  • A thorough assessment of drug and alcohol history
  • Medical detoxification
  • Psychiatry sensitive to addiction forming medications
  • Initial drug test and ongoing monitoring through random screenings time
  • Group therapy including topics such as addictions, spirituality and relapse prevention
  • Facilitation of 12 step group attendance or an alternative such as SMART Recovery

OUR APPROACH TO PATIENT CARE

We believe that eating disorders are driven by anxiety and profound disruptions to the sufferers’ sense of self. We offer our patients hope, rooted in the belief that they are capable of living an authentic life of meaning and connectedness. Our goal is to create a culture that nurtures the integration of body and mind.

At Reasons, we tailor treatment plans to the needs of each patient for each level of care, restoring physical and mental health as you go through recovery and discover new ways to enjoy your life, your spirit and your physical self. From somatic therapies to individualized inpatient anorexia treatment meal plans, our staff will customize a plan that will help you toward wholeness.

For inpatient, outpatient (IOP or PHP), or residential treatment for co-occurring disorders along with an eating disorder, Reason’s gender-inclusive programs help adolescents and adults across multiple levels of care.
