Finding Freedom Together: The Transformative Power of Equine Interactions in Eating Disorder Recovery

What Is Therapy with Equine Interactions? Equine Therapy
Psychotherapy with equine interactions uses guided interaction with horses to support emotional healing, self-awareness and connection. Our groups will cover themes commonly found in process groups, CBT groups, etc. The incorporation of horses is designed to enhance these topics through the relational experience of connecting with the horse.
Interactions with the horses all take place on the ground—it isn’t about horsemanship or riding, it’s about relationship.
In these groups, participants engage in activities with horses to support mindfulness, grounding and connection. Each session is guided by a licensed therapist, and through these experiences, participants can increase their ability to notice energetic and emotional shifts. By observing the horses’ body language, individuals can begin to explore themes including connection, trust and boundaries.
At Reasons Eating Disorder Center, therapy with horses is a part of our experiential and compassion-focused approach to care, helping individuals reconnect with themselves and others through nonjudgmental, embodied healing.
Why Horses?
Horses can be powerful partners in the therapeutic relationship. Through non-riding interactions with horses, it creates a space to explore one’s own emotional landscape. Horses have ways of communicating and respond to their environment in ways that, when paired with therapeutic healing, can be deeply impactful for folks working through trauma, anxiety and eating disorders. In their presence, participants learn to:
- Recognize emotional patterns and responses
- Build trust and healthy boundaries
- Practice mindfulness and grounding
- Experience connection without judgment
Their gentle yet powerful presence creates a safe space to explore vulnerability.
How Therapy with Equine Interactions Supports Eating Disorder Recovery
- Reconnecting With the Body
Eating disorders often create disconnection from the body. Through equine-assisted therapy, individuals begin to rebuild that connection—noticing breath, movement and subtle cues from both themselves and the horse. This embodied awareness helps restore safety and compassion toward the body.
- Emotional Regulation
Horses engage in self-regulation in ways that may appear similar to the ways in which humans self-regulate. When we can observe and note the ways in which horses self-regulate, we can too begin to practice self-regulation through the release of tension. Mindfulness activities with the horses support participants in connection to self, increased awareness, breathing and self-soothing. These are all skills that are vital for recovery.
- Reframing Control Through Connection
For many with eating disorders, control feels like safety. Horses challenge that belief by showing that trust and influence come not through control, but through mutual understanding and respect. This shift helps individuals reframe their relationship with control, perfectionism and self-protection.
- Restoring Confidence and Presence
Each successful interaction with a horse builds confidence. The experience of being in a relationship with a powerful animal reinforces a sense of capability, self-worth and calm. Participants rediscover what it means to feel grounded, confident and safe in their own presence.
Where Science Meets Soul
Research shows that equine-assisted psychotherapy can reduce anxiety, depression and trauma symptoms while improving self-esteem and emotional regulation. For individuals healing from eating disorders, this kind of experiential work complements traditional therapy and nutrition support beautifully.
But beyond research, equine therapy offers something profoundly human—the experience of being met with honesty, compassion and connection.
Many describe moments of deep peace—a slowing heartbeat, a shared breath or the quiet realization that they no longer have to protect themselves from being seen.
These experiences are not small; they are often the beginning of real, embodied recovery.
